The National Eisteddfod, 2010

The Principality Building Society
1000mm x 700mm

The National Eisteddfod are celebrating a thirty Year partnership with The Principality Building Society. I was commissioned to design a panel to present to them at this year\'s Eisteddfod. The brief was that the Principality unites North and South Wales and is very proud to be at the heart of welsh life. I took the Head Office building in Cardiff and used this as the framework for the piece. I used an image of the Menai Straits representing the North, and an industrial scene to celebrate the industrial South. Images of the Eisteddfod were etched into the shop front windows.

Winner's Award, Welsh Learner of the Year, National Eisteddfod, 2010
700mm x 500mm

The winning panel depicts a number of different scenes from South East Wales. When commissioned to design these pieces, I was asked to incorporate the culture, heritage and vibrancy of the area. The steel works at Ebbw Vale played such an important part in the history of the area and dominated the landscape. I included valley terraces, a working man\'s club, and lots of chimneys. A line from a poem by Robat Powell was etched onto the panel to be discovered in certain lights.

Winner's Award for The Prose Competition, The National Eisteddfod, 2010
600mm x 600mm

This panel was designed in memory of Elen Rhys. Elen was passionate about the welsh language and had a life long association with welsh learning. Sadly, Elen died in October 2009, and this panel was designed to commemorate aspects of Elen\'s life. I have included an image of Porthkerry Park - Barry, Bangor University, and St Peter\'s Church - Sully. These depict key times in Elen\'s life. I also included an image of the tongue of the Dragon, representing the welsh language, and image of the Waverly paddle steamer where her business was launched, and a mythological horse to represent her love of history, story telling and her passion for horses she shared with her son. The frame work for the panel was brought together by the logo for Acen, the company Elen founded.
